Highams Park Lake

Highams Park Lake, situated in the Highams Park area, has a rich history and natural significance. Originally part of the “Highams Estate,” the lake was created by renowned landscape designer Humphry Repton in 1794 as a key element of the estate’s grand landscaping. Repton’s plans, documented in his red book of designs, reveal that much of his vision for the area was realized.

Over the years, Highams Park Lake has served various recreational purposes. It has been used for boating activities, providing a picturesque setting for leisurely rides on the water. Since 1981, a local Scout Group has utilized the lake for canoeing activities, offering opportunities for young adventurers to learn and enjoy water-based pursuits.

Angling is also permitted on Highams Park Lake, allowing fishing enthusiasts to engage in their favorite pastime in this tranquil and scenic environment. The lake’s diverse ecosystem supports a variety of fish species, attracting anglers seeking a rewarding fishing experience.

Owned and managed by the City of London Corporation under the authority of the Epping Forest Act of 1878, Highams Park Lake is part of the larger Epping Forest area. It holds significant ecological value and is designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). These designations recognize the lake’s role in preserving and protecting unique habitats and species within the Epping Forest ecosystem.

The surrounding area of Highams Park Lake showcases a diverse range of plant and tree species. From Scots Pine to Sweet Chestnut, Deodar to Weymouth Pine, and Alders to Willows, the vegetation contributes to the park’s natural beauty. Upstream of the lake, ancient pollarded Hornbeams and a grove of young Oaks dating back to 1977 add to the area’s charm and ecological significance.

In addition to its flora, Highams Park Lake is a haven for various bird species. Visitors can observe graceful swans, colorful mallards, elegant great crested grebes, tufted ducks, coots, moorhens, pochards, herons, and more recently, cormorants. These avian residents and seasonal visitors add to the park’s vibrant wildlife and offer birdwatchers an opportunity to appreciate their beauty and behavior.
