Fishery Information

The Barrows, affectionately known as ‘the Tanks’, consists of three concrete bowl-type reservoirs that provide a unique fishing experience. These reservoirs offer a challenge for anglers while still being approachable, making them an excellent choice for those looking to develop their skills for larger waters. Considered by many as the best bank fishing among the Bristol Water Fisheries, the Barrows are known for their free rising trout and crystal-clear waters.

The fishing opportunities at the Barrows are diverse. The natural sloping banks of tanks one and two provide ideal conditions for dry fly fishing from April to September, with fish rising throughout the day but particularly active in the early mornings and late evenings. The stony banks of all the tanks offer habitat for sedges, allowing for exciting sport with stick flies and diawl bachs in the spring and dry flies in midsummer. The flows and outlet towers attract coarse fish fry later in the season, drawing in fry feeders for thrilling action. Fishing with fry imitations can be particularly successful during this time.

The deep drop-offs below the steeper walls of the reservoirs provide a hidden pathway for trout to patrol. With a well-placed goldhead or weighted nymph on a long leader and floating line, anglers can have a chance at targeting these patrolling trout. The circular nature of the banks ensures that no matter the wind direction, there will always be a fishable spot available. It’s important to note that wading is not permitted at the Barrows, and anglers should be cautious as the banks can become slippery when the water level recedes.

The community of regular anglers at the Barrows is known for its friendly and welcoming atmosphere. They create a club-like environment along the shores of the lakes and are often willing to offer advice and information to newcomers and beginners. With its scenic surroundings, variety of fishing options, and camaraderie among anglers, the Barrows is an ideal fishery for anglers of all levels of experience.
