Located on the scenic Somerset Levels, the West Sedgemoor Drain, also known as Stathe Drain, is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. Although the fish in this drain can be easily startled, once you’ve mastered its intricacies, the rewards are undoubtedly worth the effort. In recent years, specimen-sized carp weighing over 30 lbs have been observed, along with pike reaching up to 20 lbs.
The drain is also home to a thriving population of quality perch, with fish weighing up to 4 lbs. Anglers with a light lure setup can enjoy exciting perch fishing, although it’s important to note that the water tends to get weedy during mid-summer before the second weed cut in September. The roach fishing in this area is exceptional, with caster and hemp being highly effective bait choices.
For those targeting bream and tench, using a pole or a waggler with chopped worm and corn can yield great results. At the pumping station, there are three wooden platform swims available, conveniently accessible from the nearby car park. So whether you’re an experienced angler or a novice, the West Sedgemoor Drain offers a diverse fishing experience amidst the beautiful Somerset landscape.
