Can supermarket bait beat boilies for carp? We put supermarket bait vs conventional carp bait to the test during a full week of carp fishing in France and one trimmed sausage hook bait helps produce a remarkable 50 lb 4 oz carp.
At St George’s Lake, John and Simon begin in separate swims with completely different approaches. One uses a homemade supermarket carp bait mix of sweetcorn, chickpeas, porridge oats, garlic, chilli, salt and sausage, while the other fishes established boilie and pellet tactics. Halfway through the week they swap baits to help separate the effect of bait from the effect of location, before opening the final 24 hours to any tactic.
The session delivers fast bites, double takes, powerful battles, big French carp and a failed wildcard sweet experiment. It also produces a valuable lesson: cheap carp bait can absolutely catch exceptional fish, but finding the carp, presenting a rig cleanly and repeating productive spots may matter more than choosing between supermarket bait and boilies.
