About Big Water
Big Water in Tyne And Wear is a nature reserve near Brunswick Village in Seaton Burn, Northumberland. It covers 25 hectares and has a mix of habitats like water, reedbeds, woodlands, and meadows. The area used to be a mining site in the 1920s.
The western part of the reserve is only for members of the Northumberland Wildlife Trust, while the eastern part is managed by Newcastle City Council and open to the public. There are boardwalks that make it easy for everyone to explore, including those in wheelchairs or with strollers.
Birdwatchers will enjoy seeing a variety of birds like sparrows, tits, swans, ducks, herons, and more. The reserve is also a popular spot for migrating swallows and wintering wildfowl.
There are bird hides, feeding stations, and viewing platforms for NWT members. The reserve is open all year round, but only guide and assistance dogs are allowed. Keep an eye out for grazing cows in the fields.
