The Lower Tamar Devon Endsleigh Fishing Club has fishing on 9 miles of the lower River Tamar below Greystone Bridge. This stretch of the Tamar is known for being the best salmon river in the South-West. The fishing is beautiful, secluded, and productive.
The salmon season runs from March 1st to October 14th. Fishing is mainly done using fly fishing techniques and is divided into 6 sections called Beats. Each Beat has 10-12 named pools where you can fish. Before September 1st, spinning (a different fishing technique) may be allowed on Beats 1 to 5 if the river is very high and visibility is poor. Beat 6 also allows spinning until mid-September.
Most fishermen only use spinning when the water is not suitable for fly fishing. Using prawn or worm as bait is not allowed. All salmon caught before June 16th must be released back into the water.
You can drive your car along the riverside track to access most of the fishing spots. Fishing can be done from the bank, croys (platforms), or by wading in the water. Some pools have boats available for use.
It is recommended to use a fly rod that is 14-15 feet long with a sink tip line and nylon line of 10-18 lbs. In low water conditions, a single-handed rod of 10-11 feet can be used. Different types of flies are recommended depending on the water level.
It is best to have a large knotless mesh landing net for catching fish.
