About Exeter Canal

The Exeter Canal in Devon is a popular fishing spot that is about 6 miles long. Some of the best places to fish are The Basin, Clapperbrook, Double Locks, Countess Wear, Lime Kilns, and Swans Nest.

The canal is known for having some of the best pike fishing in the South West, with pike weighing up to 30 pounds. It is common to catch pike weighing up to 20 pounds. The most popular fishing methods are using dead bait or lures. All of the areas mentioned above are great for pike fishing.

You can fish for free between The Basin and Double Locks. To fish in other parts of the canal, you will need a permit from the Exeter & District Angling Association, which you can get from the Angling Centre on Smythen Street in Exeter.

If you are 12 years or older and want to fish for salmon, trout, freshwater fish, or eels in England and Wales, you must have a Rod Fishing Licence from the Environment Agency. You can get permits at the Reception in the Civic Centre.
