About Ulverston Canal

Ulverston Canal in Cumbria is the shortest and deepest canal in the country. It was built in 1796 and is a little over a mile long and about 60 feet wide. The canal goes from Canal Head in Ulverston to Canal Foot on the Leven estuary.

You can find carp, bream, tench, roach, crucians, rudd, perch, and pike in the canal, as well as other fish that may have been released by locals. People enjoy fishing for tench, bream, and other fish, especially at the beginning of the fishing season. The canal also has some big carp and good-sized bream. Roach fishing is great from late summer to late autumn, but there can be issues with weeds in the summer.

There are natural fishing spots near the town, and towards Canal Foot, there are around 60 designated fishing platforms that can be booked for competitions. You can walk along the eastern bank to access the canal, or you can drive to either end.
