About Priory Park Lakes

Priory Park Lakes in Essex used to be two separate ponds dug over 800 years ago by monks for keeping livestock. They were later joined together to create a one-acre lake with an island in the middle. The island is a bird sanctuary and not accessible to the public.

The park covers 30 acres and has toilets, a cafe, playing fields, children’s amusements, gardens, and a museum. The lake is four feet deep on average and has eight fishing spots, all suitable for disabled anglers. In the past, the lake could get muddy in bad weather, but improvements have been made.

The lake is home to carp weighing up to the mid to high 20’s, with many fish in the double-digit range. Fishing is not allowed along the public pathways on the north and south banks for safety reasons.
